Abstract. The CES potential assigns a single number to every possible state of the economy, creating a landscape of valleys and hills. Economies naturally move downhill toward equilibrium, and the shape of this landscape -- controlled by curvature and information friction -- determines whether adjustment is swift and decisive or sluggish and fragile.
