Abstract. Epidemiologists use R~0~ to predict whether a disease will spread or die out. The same mathematics applies to technology adoption: when the spectral radius of the next-generation matrix exceeds 1, a transition becomes self-sustaining — and cross-sector feedback can push the system past this threshold even when no single sector could get there alone.
